Apple has introduced a new feature called Digital ID, which could make traveling easier for you! With Digital ID, users can create an ID in Apple Wallet from their U.S. passport and present the ID with an iPhone or Apple Watch.

Initially, the functionality to scan this Digital ID at TSA Checkpoints will be rolled out at 250 airports in the United States for domestic travel. Currently, the Digital ID will not replace a passport for international travel; you will only be able to use it at select airports for domestic travel.
Digital ID will allow you to create an ID from your U.S. passport and utilize it in place of a REAL ID-compliant driver’s license or state ID for domestic travel at select airports. After the initial rollout of 250 airports, Apple is hoping for additional acceptance at other airports and eventually at select businesses and organizations for identity and age verification.

To create the Digital ID, you can head into the Apple Wallet and push the + button in the top corner. Then select “Driver’s License or ID Cards” and select “Digital ID.” Then you will need to follow the on-screen instructions to set-up the Digital ID. The process will include scanning the photo page of the passport, reading the chip embedded with your iPhone, taking a selfie, and completing a series of facial and head movements.

In addition to the new Digital ID, Apple also has a feature that allows certain users to store their driver’s license or state ID card in the Apple Wallet. The ability to add a driver’s license or state ID to Apple Wallet is live in 12 states and Puerto Rico. The feature has also launched internationally in Japan with My Number Card on iPhone.
